I'm taking a break from continuing the installments from my presentation about green libraries in observance of one of my favorite times of the year. I confess; I'm fascinated with holiday decorations.
I'm focusing on Christmas decorations, because they are widely interpreted and frequently occurring. The menorah, for example, is the most prevalent non-Christmas display I see, and it doesn't hold a candle (sorry) to the effusive Christmas festoons and what not.
More people talk about decorating during the holidays than any other time of year. I'd even venture to say more men participate in decorating and seem opinionated about it than at any other time of the year.
Whether it's homes ...
people like to deck the halls, roofs, walls and lawns surrounding their structures.
Whether it's restrained...
people express themselves in a variety of ways and aren't shy about it. I often wonder if the style of exterior holiday decorations mirror the interior of the buildings. I imagine the conversations about designing the exterior holiday decorations are very different from those about designing the interior decorations. It is a mix of culture, tradition and celebration that most likely guides the exterior decorating decisions and it seems like there is much opportunity for creative evolution in product design.
As for me, I'm always drawn to the lights in the season of lights when the days are dark and short. Here is one of my favorites: an ice boat that the town of Red Bank decorates each year in the waterfront park.
